About the AFC Program in Nova Scotia
- The goal is to provide support for these children in a familiar place and home and to maintain their existing family relationships until they can be reunited with their family.
- The program also helps to reduce the stress on a parent, so they can focus on getting help and addressing the problems that necessitate their child to leave their care.
- Income through the AFC Program is not taxable by the CRA, does not affect Guaranteed Income Supplement, and does not impact the child or caregiver’s eligibility for other social programs such as Income Assistance.
Which children are eligible?
- Children who are not in the Minister’s care, but their families are unable to care for them or they are at substantial risk as per the Child Protection Assessment.
- The Social Worker reviews the proposed arrangement and the child’s family situation to ensure the safety and appropriateness of this arrangement for the child and caregiver.
How much financial support is available?
- First month: $500 for the first child and $250 per additional child ($1000 maximum)
- Regular monthly amount: $250 for each child thereafter (no maximum)
- Other expenses are considered on a case-by-case basis.
How long does this financial support last?
Up to 18 months, or until the child is reunified with their parents or the child is transitioned into another care arrangement.
What other supports are available?
- Social worker assistance with regular contact and visits.
- Other community supports that may be right for you and the child you are caring for will be discussed with the social worker.
What else do I need to know about becoming a caregiver?
- Everyone 12 years or older in your home must either submit or undergo several background checks. The cost of these checks will be reimbursed.
- You must complete an application form and sign an AFC Agreement.
